The Good, The Bad, The Ugly - Week 3
Good
Adrian Peterson. AP took the Vikings, put them on his back and ran all over the Lions. The Vikings passing game looks terrible and Farve looks his age but Peterson single-handedly won the game Sunday. Over the past 2 weeks, Peterson has over 300 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns. Without Peterson, the Vikings don’t have a shot at the playoffs.
Runner Up: Michael Vick
Bad
The Mike Shanahan era. Shanahan arrogantly thought he could go into the season with a stable of washed up running backs and the corpse of Joey Galloway and still put up points. The season began with a big win over Dallas, followed by a late game collapse in Houston. Sunday the Redskins lost outright to the Rams. This week they draw the ire of Philadelphia. Andy Reid does not want to look like he made a mistake in cutting Donovan loose. Shanahan has his work cut out for him.
Runner Up: Sebastian Janikowski
Ugly
The San Francisco 49ers. Congratulations to San Fran for being the first team to fire a coordinator in-season. After last year, the 49er’s appeared to be headed right direction and in a weak NFC West, they would make the playoffs by default. They still may sneak into the playoffs, but winning the NFC West in 2010 is like being the tallest mountain in Kansas. They’ve put up the least points in the league and QB Alex Smith’s progression appears to have stalled. Mike Singletary wanted winners but ended up with Michael Crabtree.
Runner Up: Garrett Hartley

Eric's Locks of Week 3 NFL
Record ATS (3-0)
Dallas Cowboys (+3) @ Houston Texans
The Cowboys have not scored consistently in two years. The Texans are all about offense. I feel the Cowboys D will hang but they have a tendency to allow big plays. With Andre Johnson, Kevin Walter, and Arian Foster in the fold big plays are bound to happen. Vegas keeps giving the Cowboys to much credit just because of their popularity. The Texans are for real and look to be a serious contender. Matt Schaub and company will eviscerate the thin secondary. The Cowboys are also giving up more in the return game than any other team, look for Jacoby Jones to have a huge day. The Cowboys are a .500 team at best. So long Wade, thanks for the memories. The Texans are 3 point favorites, take the Texans to win by at least a touchdown.
PICK: TEXANS (-3)
New York Jets (+2 ½)@ Miami Dolphins
Mark Sanchez looked great against a questionable New England Secondary. I don’t care. I’m not sold on the Sanchize just yet. The Dolphins are a prototypical Parcell's built team. They’re well coached, fundamentally sound, and polished. The Jets are loaded with talent but in building that talent came with a cost. The team has more than a few head cases (ex Braylon Edwards, Santonio Holmes) and that type of drama always holds a team back from reaching its full potential. I love the Dolphins to cover and possibly win this one. Without Kris Jenkins, the Jets are more vulnerable to the run and we all know the Dolphins are going to commit to the running game. Revis is out this week and next. Brandon Marshall should continue his development in this offense. We all saw what Blodin did to Cromartie is week 1. Marshall is a faster version of Boldin. Take the ‘Fins to win this one outright.

Week 3 Start Em/ Sit Em
Quarterbacks
1. Donovan McNabb WAS - Facing the Rams, McNabb will look to throw early and often against a defense that will struggle to stop the run and the pass. McNabb was in sync with his receiving corps against Houston, this will continue against St. Louis.
2. Michael Vick PHI - The Jaguars won't be able to contain Vick. They get no pressure from their front four, and their cover corners are not quick enough to keep up with Maclin and Jackson. Vick will run and pass, the Eagles should win by double digits if their defense doesn't give up garbage points again.
Sit Em
1. Joshua Freeman TAM - He is playing the Steelers, sit him.
2. Mark Sanchez NYJ - Don't get on this train yet, the Dolphins will put pressure on Marky Mark all game forcing.
RUNNING BACKS
Start Em
1. Cedric Benson CIN - He is HUNGRY. Calling out the direction of his offense. Benson is going to go off against a bad Panthers defense.
2. Knowshon Moreno DEN - The Colts are week against the run, and you better believe the Broncos are going to run the ball as much as they can in order to keep Peyton off the field.
Sit Em
1. Arian Foster HOU - Dallas will completely contain the Texans running game, unfortunately they will have to deal with a quarterback that just threw for nearly 500 yards last week.
WIDE RECEIVERS
Start Em
1. Kevin Walter HOU - Give him a shot this week as the Cowboys struggled against the passing attack from the Bears last week. Walter will get extra looks as the Boys will try to "contain" Andre.
2. Devin Hester CHI - He's back, start him. This game has shootout written all over it. With Clay Matthews breathing down Cutler's neck every play, the short slants to Hester will be money all night.
Sit Em
1. Steve Smith CAR - Clausen will be pressured all game, the Bengals will be running the ball down their throats and killing the clock. With double coverage all game, Clausen will look to the opposite side of the field.

Power Rankings
1. New Orleans Saints (2-0) - Defending champs are without Reggie Bush for at least 6 weeks.
2. Green Bay Packers (2-0) - The explosive offense will be put to the test against the Bears defense and the Chicago faithful on Monday night.
3. Pittsburgh Steelers (2-0) - Defense has won them two straight games, big test on the road against a young and hot Tampa Bay squad.
4. Houston Texans (2-0) - Two down, eight to go to make the playoffs.
5. Indianapolis Colts (1-1) - Peyton showed us why we cannot sleep on these Colts.
6. New York Jets (1-1) - The Jets finally walked the walk against the Patriots last week.
7. Miami Dolphins (2-0) - Great defensive play combined with very solid performances from Chad Henne has led the Dolphins to a 2-0 start.
8. New England Patriots (1-1) - The Pats will pick up their play, lets not forget who they have behind center.
9. Baltimore Ravens (1-1) - They beat the mighty Jets, then lost a tough one on the road to the Bengals who were due. No offense out of Flacco yet, this team will get hot soon.
10. Washington Redskins (1-1) - A win against Dallas, a near win against Houston, this team is solid.
11. Atlanta Falcons (1-1) - Let's find out about this team this week when they take on the Saints in New Orleans.
12. Cincinnati Bengals (1-1) - The Bengals defense woke up in week 2, look out Jimmy Clausen.
13. San Diego Chargers (1-1) - Seattle, Arizona, Oakland, and St. Louis are the Chargers next four opponents. 5-1 anyone?
14. Chicago Bears (2-0) - Huge test for Cutler at home against the Packers this Monday night.
15. Tennessee Titans (1-1) - Vince Young should bounce back, but at New York Giants this week will be tough.
16. Philadelphia Eagles (1-1) - Close loss to the Packers, then the Lions nearly came back, I expect a blowout in Jacksonville.
17. San Francisco 49ers (0-2) - This team will bounce back, their defense is legit. I still see them winning at least 9.
18. Dallas Cowboys (0-2) - Test. Beat Houston and they pass, lose to Houston and this team will be in a big hole. Very tough schedule ahead of them.
19. Kansas City Chiefs (2-0) - This team still has a lot to prove. How does Jamaal Charles not touch the ball until the second quarter?
20. New York Giants (1-1) - The Titans are in town this week. The Colts ran all over the G-Men, I bet Chris Johnson does too.
21. Minnesota Vikings (0-2) - Didn't have the Vikings in the playoffs from the start, but did not expect this type of play out of them.
22. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-0) - Home against the Steelers this week. A win here and the Bucs are in serious business.
23. Denver Broncos (1-1) - I am impressed with Kyle Orton's play so far.
24. Detroit Lions (0-2) - I said this from day 1, the Lions may lose eight games, they may lose twelve games, but I guarantee they will be in all of their games with the young talent they have.
25. Oakland Raiders (1-1) - I like the defense, and I like them at home. No more Campbell behind center, we are going back to Bruce Gradkowski.
26. Arizona Cardinals (1-1) - They got exposed in Atlanta.
27. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-1) - I expect the Jaguars to get toasted this week by Philly.
28. Cleveland Browns (0-2) - Joshua Cribbs finally got some touches in week 2, what happened? Touchdown.
29. St. Louis Rams (0-2) - The Rams have been competitive, but they need to keep running the ball consistently and allow Bradford to develop that way.
30. Carolina Panthers (0-2) - This team is bad, but at least Clausen gets the nod this week.
31. Seattle Seahawks (1-1) - Pete Carroll won week one, but now he faces the Chargers explosive offense.
32. Buffalo Bills (0-2) - The Bills are not a good team.

THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY
The Good, The Bad, The Ugly….Quarterback Edition
The Good
Mark Sanchez-
Sanchez looked like the franchise QB the Jets drafted 2 years ago. In week one, it appeared the Jets would need to win in spite of Sanchez but he bounced back with a superb performance. Sanchez completed 21 of 30 attempts for 3 scores and no picks. With Santonio Holmes waiting in the wings, the Jets have the look of dominate team on both sides of the ball.
The Bad
Joe Flacco
From Mother’s in Federal Hill to Momma’s in Canton, the mantra of the Inner Harbor has gone from “Wako for Flacco” to “Flacco is Wacko.” What an abysmal day for the 3rd year QB out of Deleware: 17 of 39, 154 yards 1 score and 4 interceptions. The Ravens entered 2010 with soaring expectations for their offense. However, after 2 weeks it’s the same old story. The Ravens have a great defense and an impotent offense. If this team wants to win the NFC north, let alone contend, Flacco must improve.
The Ugly
Jason Campbell
We may have witnessed the end of the Jason Campbell era in Oakland. The Raiders pulled Campbell at half time in favor of fan favorite Bruce Gradkowski. Apparently, Campbell’s first half QB rating of 42.9 didn’t impress head coach Tom Cable. Has anyone benefited more from the Raiders front office ineptitude than Gradkowski? The Raiders have not announced who will start next week, but we have to expect to Gradkowski again soon. Campbell will have a short leash if he does get another shot. If only Al Davis were still alive…

Eric's LOCKS of Week 2 NFL
Record (1-0)
Chicago Bears (1-0) @ Dallas Cowboys (0-1)
Cowboys -7 ½ (41)
The Cowboys offense gained a ton of yards in 2009 but failed to match that with the requisite points. That trend appears to have bled over into 2010. The Cowboys doubled the Redskins yardage total and appeared to have no trouble moving the ball up and down field. Miles Austin was unstoppable the running backs combined for 4.7 yards per carry. However, Jason Garrett doesn’t appear to know how to establish and manage an effective running game. In the Red Zone, the Cowboys have a tendency to break out into shotgun spread sets. To be effective in the spread, you must have a line that can hold their blocks without the assistance of additional blockers. The Cowboys were playing with 2 backups and 1 of those was the now infamous Alex Barron. The Bears squeaked out a win over the Lions. The Lions covered last week and would’ve pull out the win and if not for the inane call on Calvin Johnson, the Lions would have done just that. Chicago’s Matt Forte broke loose for just over 200 total yards against Detroit. Dallas will not allow this to happen. The Cowboys must have some concern that they only carry 3 cornerbacks on the roster. An injury, even 1 that causes either Newman or Jenkins to go out for a few plays will cause the secondary to scramble. Against Mike Martz’ offense, which calls for a series of deep routes and open sets, the Cowboys could find themselves with Alan Ball covering Greg Olson. I’ll take Olson in that match up every time. Julius Peppers lit up Matt Stafford last week. Romo hopes a healthy line will spare him that fate. I don’t feel the Bears have anyone to keep pace with the Cowboys’ receiving corps. Chicago must establish a pass rush and force Romo into dicey spots and make risky throws.
The Cowboys are favored by 7 ½ points in this game. I’ve gone back and forth on this pick. Marc Colombo and Kyle Kosier return to Dallas’ offensive line but I don’t know if that will cure all their ills. They have the talent to blow the Bears out but can they get out of their own way? The Cowboys will win but the Bears will cover. The over is set at 41, given Dallas’s redzone problems, I will take the under on this one.
PICK: BEARS +7.5 / UNDER 41
Miami Dolphins (1-0) @ Minnesota Vikings (0-1)
Vikings (-6) (39)
Farve shocked everyone last season. He looked as good as ever. Brett made many of us forget about those interception plagued at end of his Green Bay tenure and about how old he looked during his year in New York. Last Thursday night, Brett reminded us that’s he’s forty something. Without Sidney Rice, the offense looked out of balance. Rice emerged as a star last year. He took the pressure off Adrian Peterson, allowed Harvin to flourish as a slot receiver/utility player and caught everything Farve threw his way. Without Rice, Farve relies too heavily upon Shiancoe. Farve and Co. must account for Karlos Dansby. The Miami linebacker recorded 3 sacks against Buffalo last week. The Saints did not put up big numbers against the Vikings but when New Orleans’ offense was clicking they rolled down the field with ease. On the Saints 2nd scoring drive, the rushed 8 times in 11 plays capping off the drive with a short rushing score by Pierre Thomas. That drive has to concern Minnesota. Miami’s offense starts with Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams. The addition of Brandon Marshall to this offense takes some of the pressure off Williams and Brown. Marshall only had 8 catches for 53 yards last week against Buffalo, but I expect that from a receiver finding his place in a new offense.
The Vikings are favored by 6 and over/under line is set at 39. Miami is well coached. The raucous Metrodome crowd should have little effect on this team. The Dolphins have upcoming games against division rivals New England and New York. In the grand scheme of the season, this game has less meaning. Minnesota cannot afford to go two games down to the Packers. Minnesota has the talent and should win the game but Miami will cover. I would be surprised but not shocked if Miami pulled off the upset. Both teams will run the ball resulting a low scoring affair. Go with the under and collect.
PICK: Dolphins +6 / Under 39

START 'EM / SIT 'EM Week 2
START 'EM
Quarterbacks: If you are in a two quarterback league consider some of these options for potential starts.
-Matt Hasselbeck SEA - Pete Carroll fired up the Seahawks last week, but Matt Hasselbeck was poised and protected behind the line of scrimmage and that made the difference. Look for Hasselbeck to have decent numbers against a Broncos secondary that allowed David Garrard to pass for three touchdowns last week.
-Josh Freeman TAMPA - Freeman had good numbers last week, and taking on the Carolina Panthers in Week 2, Freeman will be forced to throw the ball as the Panthers will try to shut down Cadillac Williams early. Freeman is consistent, and expect decent numbers out of the 2nd year pro.
SIT 'EM Quarterbacks
-Vince Young TENN - VY takes on the best defense in the league in Pittsburgh this week. Chris Johnson will get 25-30 touches, the Steelers will force the running game and try to dominate the time of possession battle. 17 points max out of the Titans offense, I do not like Young in this matchup.
START 'EM
RUNNING BACKS
-Jonathan Stewart CAR - The Panthers will struggle throwing the ball this week because QB Matt Moore is coming off a rough week against the Giants where he ended up with a concussion. Williams will get 20 carries, Stewart will get 15, one of them will bust a big run for a td, I think it'll be Stewart.
-Jerome Harrison CLE - The Browns may have to start Senaca Wallace if Jake Delhomme is unable to go with his ankle injury. That being said, with Wallace of Delhomme, Harrison should receive a large amount of touches against a very vulnerable road run defense in Kansas City. I am expecting a big day out of Jerome.
SIT 'EM
-Ricky Williams MIA - Williams received more carries than Ronnie Brown last week, however, that will not be the case this week. The Dolphins won't stray away from the run game even though they are facing one of the most stout run defenses in the NFL, but Williams will see a lot of pine this week due to Brown being the better matchup against the Vikings D, and the Dolphins will be throwing the ball a little more often than we are accustomed to seeing them do so.
START 'EM
WIDE RECEIVERS
-Mike Wallace PITT - This is a big reach, but Dennis Dixon took a shot down field with Wallace last week and they connected. I expect a lot of play-action looks from the Steelers this week to prevent the Titans from stacking the box every down.
-Dez Bryant DAL - Bryant has some serious potential in this league, and Tony Romo quickly developed some trust with the rookie early into the Sunday night matchup against the Redskins. Bryant has strong hands, and WANTS the ball every play. Gotta like this kid.
SIT 'EM
-Randy Moss NEW- Moss will get shutdown by Revis, end of story. Maybe a catch or two, maybe a target in the end zone, but Welker and Tate will have the big games.

BREAKING NEWS!
JETS DL Kris Jenkins is done for the season with his third ACL tear in his career
COLTS S Bob Sanders is out INDEFINITELY with torn biceps
Monday, September 13, 2010
The Good, The Bad, The Ugly
The Good:
Arian Foster:
- Foster made it on to the fantasy football radar after a nice preseason. However, no one expected the performance he had against the Colts on Sunday. The Texans as well as Fantasy Owners who snagged him in the later rounds are ecstatic about this guy. The most exciting aspect to Foster’s emergence is the fact we might get to hear Chris Berman yell out “Arian-Nation-Foster” after he runs roughshod over the Redskins next Sunday.
The Bad:
The Raiders
- The team thought they could turn the corner this season with the addition of Jason Campbell and a revamped line backing corps, but it was business as usual on Sunday. The Titans ran all over the Raiders and Campbell looked like the guy Washington couldn’t wait to get rid of. Has goodwill ever evaporated any faster than it has for Jason Campbell? We may have a Bruce Gradkowski sighting soon. Where is the core group in this team, the group of players that are supposed to lead this team to a winning season?
The Ugly
- Alex Barron. The Cowboys released the second most penalized offensive lineman in 2009, Flozell Adams, and acquired the most penalized in Alex Barron. The Cowboys were clearly the better team on Sunday night but Alex Barron (apparently) had money on the Redskins and did his part to ensure the game would go that way. As time expired, Tony Romo hit Roy Williams for a game winning touchdown. However, Barron was called for his THIRD penalty of the night and the game ended. Get Well Soon Marc Columbo.

Eric's LOCK of the Week
Week 1 LOCK
Detroit Lions (-6.5) @ Chicago Bears
The Bears hope to reinvigorate their offense year by bringing in Mike Martz. Martz established his reputation as an offensive guru from his days heading up the St. Louis Rams’ "Greatest Show on Turf." That was about 10 years ago and since that time Martz has delivered less than stellar results. Martz’s offense calls for seven step drops, which requires a formidable offensive line, something Bears do not have. Conversely, the Lions added Suh and Vanden Bosch to their defensive front. Cutler is about to take a beating if he does not get the ball out of his hands quickly. Under duress Cutler has a tendency to rely upon his arm to thread the needle with his passes. In 2009, this over-reliance led to 26 interceptions. Offensively, the Lions added Jahvid Best and Nate Burleson to compliment Calvin Johnson and Matthew Stafford. The Lions are no’t about to set the world on fire, but their stock is rising.
The Bears are 6 ½ point favorites while the games total is 44 ½ . The Lions will cover and I’m taking the under. This pick runs counter to all historical evidence. The Lions have almost got that Matt Millen stink off of them and they're going to win a few games and pull themselves out of the NFC north cellar.
PICK: Lions +6.5 Under 44.5

Week 1 NFL Picks
DANNY'S LOCK OF THE WEEK-
San Francisco 49ers (-3) @ Seattle Seahawks - Pete Carroll has much to prove before I will even begin considering the Seahawks as a competive team. The entire Seahawks offensive line is on the injury report, and starting left tackle, sixth overall pick in this year's draft Russell Okung is out with a high ankle sprain. The 49ers looked strong on both sides of the ball during the preseason, and Vernon Davis just landed the most lucrative contract for a tight end in the national football league, $37 million with $23 million guarenteed, so expect him to have some extra "pep" in his step. Overall, this is a great matchup for the 49ers. The defense will shutdown Seattle's no-namers on the outside and Justin Forsett will have trouble running that ball with Patrick Willis barking in here ear all game long. Easy win for the road team. I like this game as my STONE COLD LEAD PIPE LOCK of the weekend. San Francisco 27 - Seattle 10
REST OF THE GAMES
Miami Dolphins (-3) @ Buffalo Bills - The Dolphins come into this game with high hopes due in large part to their major off season acquisition of WR Brandon Marshall. Marshall is the star receiver that the Dolphins desperately need to keep opposing defenses unable to stack the box against the Dolphins stellar rushing offense. Marshall may not be the difference maker in this game, but the Dolphins will demonstrate the offensive fluidity this week that many teams will hope to have by week five. Miami 24 - Buffalo 10.
Oakland Raiders @ Tennessee Titans (-6.5) - This line tells a lot about what Vegas thinks of a west coast team traveling to the east coast to face a team with a good defense. The Titans have a good defense, and tag that along with one of the best running backs in the NFL, Chris Johnson, this team will be hard to beat. The Titans will shutdown the Raiders offense, and Chris Johnson should go off against the Raiders run defense that was pathetic last season. Tennessee 20 - Oakland 10.
Cincinnati Bengals (+4.5) @ New England Patriots -The Bengals will put themselves on the radar once again this season with a huge opening game upset over the Patriots in Foxboro. The Bengals defense is severely underrated, Odom will be playing, and the secondary can sustain the Patriots passing attack. That being said, the Patriots downfall is there defense. And with Cedric Benson balancing out the Bengals offense, Carson Palmer should have the time to sit in the pocket and pass it to Ocho Cinco and TO. Cincinnati 34 - New England 27.
Detroit Lions (+6.5) @ Chicago Bears - The best way to describe the rise of the Detroit Lions this season is to say that they are a .500 team. What I mean is that I think they will lose 8 games but have a legitmate chance to win atleast 8 games. Now they will most likely finish in the 4-6 win category, but the Lions have something nice brewing in their pot. That being said, they'll keep it close in Chicago, but this is a MUST WIN GAME for Jay Cutler. A poor preseason has the Bear fans in a very low frame of mind, and after last season Cutler better be ready to impress the Chicago faithful. Chicago 27 - Detroit 24.
Carolina Panthers @ New York Giants (-6.5) - Eli had a career year passing the ball last season, but the Giants did not make the playoffs. In order for the G-Men to have success, they must run the football. Bradshaw and Jacobs can handle that dilemma, but can the Giants defense step up this season and take the NFC-East crown away from the Cowboys. Panthers still have some work to gel together on the offensive end of the ball, but they do have serious potential for a good season. Giants score early and never look back. New York 24 - Carolina 16.
Atlanta Falcons @ Pittsburgh Steelers (+2.5) - Do not sleep on the Steelers just because Big Ben is out for four games. The Steelers defense is back and better than ever, and Polumalu will cause fits for the Falcons and this game will be won in the trenches. Welcome back to hard-nosed, run the ball up the gut, Steelers football. Pittsburgh 17 - Atlanta 13.
Cleveland Browns (+3) @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Josh Freeman has been out and missed too much needed practice time. Jake Delhomme has looked very strong all pre-season and the Jerome Harrison show is ready to premier. Browns win in Tampa. Cleveland 20 - Tampa Bay 13.
Denver Broncos @ Jacksonville Jaguars (-3) - Taking the home team in this matchup. Always tough for the west coast team to make the trip east and play well. Orton versus Garrard, I will take Garrard at home. Jacksonville 21 - Denver 16
Indianapolis Colts @ Houston Texans (+2.5) - 1-15 against Indy in eight seasons. They had them twice last season but blew it. Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson will start early, a few stops and hopefully a turnover and the Texans have this one. Look for Houston to use Arian Foster to keep the Colts offense off the field. Foster has looked strong during pre-season and camp, so I expect a somewhat balanced attack from Gary Kubiak and I like Houston outright. Houston 31 - Indianapolis 27
Green Bay Packers (-3) @ Philadelphia Eagles - The Eagles will be a good team this season. Kolb will have his ups and downs, but overall this team is too explosive and very fast on defense to be a bad team. Green Bay, however, is a very good team and even though Aaron Rodgers has been considerably better in Green Bay (14 INT in 19 games), the Packers have too much for the home team. Green Bay 24 - Philadelphia 20
Arizona Cardinals (-4) @ St. Louis Rams - All signs are pointing to Sam Bradford getting an opening day win. Larry Fitzgerald is a little banged up, and Derek Anderson is the starting quarterback for Arizona. Anderson has no played well as of late, so this is a big time statement game for him. For this reason, I like Arizona to get the win and continue the Rams awful streak against them (Rams haven't won at home against Arizona since 2004). Arizona 17 - St. Louis 13
Dallas Cowboys (-3.5) @ Washington Redskins - Donovan McNabb begins his career with the Redskins and unfortunately it is against a team that beat him three times last season. Also, to add to the pessimism for McNabb, the Cowboys returned 20-22 starters from last season. The Cowboys will win a sloppy game here, I believe the Redskins offensive line will have serious issues against the Cowboys front seven. Dallas 20 - Washington 13.
Baltimore Ravens (+2) @ New York Jets - Do you need a preview for this game? It is going to be low scoring, a lot of physical play, and you can expect these guys to play as hard as they can for the enitre sixty minutes of this game. What a game to start MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL this season. Baltimore 13 - New York Jets 10
San Diego Chargers (-5) @ Kansas City Chiefs - Phillip Rivers is without some weapons, Vincent Jackson and LT, but Gates, Floyd, Crayton, and Matthews will make up for lost weapons. The Chargers are going to be good this season, and they start the season off with KC, Jacksonville, Seattle, Arizona, Oakland, and St. Louis...win streak anyone? Big Phil is a beast and he continues to get better each season. Matt Cassell will enjoy having Charlie Weis as his offensive coordinator, and I think it will go likewise for Ryan and Phillip. San Diego 24 - Kansas City 14

THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL PREDICTION
Season Record: (0-0)
Minnesota Vikings @ New Orleans Saints (-6)
The defending champions will defend their title mightily. The Vikings are not ready for the season yet. One more week of preparation would have done them good. Farve got a shot of a lubricant in his ankle two weeks ago, and I am not fully convinced he is where he needs to be. The Saints offense is phenomenal. They are the same, more experienced, offense from last year, and they are healthy. Brees should look in mid-season form here, as his three-step-drop passing style will work well against the strong pass rush of the Vikings front seven. Reggie Bush will be a mismatch for the Vikings linebackers, and the deep pass could cause problems as well. Drew Brees has a career 95 quarterback rating at home, and in the past two seasons the Saints are 11-4 at home and Brees has a 43:9 TD to INT ratio. The Saints will light up the scoreboard early, and running the ball in the second half will take the clock away from the Vikings. The Saints win the opening game of the 2010 season, New Orleans 30 - Minnesota 20.

NFC WEST
The 49ers are entering the 2010 season with one goal; win the division. With Kurt Warner out in Arizona, and the Pete Carroll regime beginning in Seattle, everyone sees the potential for the 49ers this season. With Alex Smith behind center, Smith made great strides last season and hopes to continue the progress, the 49ers will have a well balanced offense that will need a consistent year from Smith. Frank Gore is the heart of the offense, the running back had 229 carries last season for 1120 yards and 10 TDs. If Gore can stay healthy and play all sixteen games this season, and the acquisition of Brian Westbrook helping on third downs, the 49ers ground game will be extremely explosive. The main reason the 49ers running attack will be even better; the receiving corps. The positive progress that Smith has made, the ridiculous talent levels of tight end Vernon Davis and second year stud receiver Michael Crabtree, has this team in great position to win some ball games. And of course we need to discuss the defense. The 49ers defense is strong, fast, and hungry. The 49ers were 6th against the rush last year, 21st against the pass, and 4th in points allowed. Clearly, the issue is the secondary. The combination of Goldson and Lewis at safety should help solidify a much more intense, ball-hawking secondary. If the pass rush stays aggressive, and the secondary can make some plays late in games, the 49ers have double digit win possibilities this season.
ARIZONA CARDINALS: (10-6 2009)
The Arizona Cardinals "Post Kurt Warner" era will begin this season and the major question mark on this team is at the quarterback position. With Matt Leinart showing no signs of leadership, progress, or command behind center during this preseason, it seems more evident that Derek Anderson will be announced the starter come opening day. Anderson has the big arm that this offense will need, but they will need consistent play more than anything. Will the Cardinals commit to a running game now that they will struggle at the quarterback position, and without Anquan Boldin opposite Larry Fitzgerald, the Cardinals wide receiver depth has taken a hit. I believe this is a rebuilding year for Arizona. They were 28th in the NFL in rushing, and that will definitely need to be better in order for them to win games. Beanie Wells and Tim Hightower can run the ball, consistent four yard gains will open up the play-action passes for Larry Fitz to get some open looks. The departure of Karlos Dansby (to Miami), Antrel Rolle (Giants), Chike Okeafor (FA), and Bryant McFadden (Pittsburgh) will significantly effect the defense. The additions of Kerry Rhodes, Joey Porter, and Justin Miller will help the defense, but it takes more than an off-season for a defense to gel together and become formidable. The Cardinals have a lot of question marks this season.
SEATTLE SEAHAWKS: (5-11 2009)
Pete Carroll takes over as coach in Seattle and he has some work in front of him. The offense was inconsistent all year last season, and the defense was pathetic defending the pass (30th in the NFL). Carroll wants his defense to be fast and play fast, so the additions of Kevin Vickerson, Quinton Teal, Robert Henderson, and Chris Clemons should help him with that. So with the hopes that the defense has improved, let's look at the offense. This will be Matt Hasselbecks team, hopefully his back will hold up, and he has some weapons to use if his offensive line blocks for him. Russell Okung, the tackle out of Oklahoma State, was the sixth pick of the draft this season and the Seahawks are expecting huge things out of him. They also picked up G Ben Hamilton from the Broncos and hope he can bolster up the offensive line as well. Keeping Hassellbeck on his feet is the primary goal for the O-line this season. Out of the backfield the Seahawks have a healthy Leon Washington who is out to prove his knee is good to go, and the work horse, Julius Jones remains a steadfast behind Hassellbeck. Deion Branch, T.J. Houshmadzadeh, rookie Golden Tate, and TE John Carlson will be Hassellbeck's targets this season. Who will take the step up in the receive corps and give Seattle an eighty reception season? The Seahawks will struggle this season, but there is hope for this team. Pete Carroll is the guy for this team.
ST. LOUIS RAMS: (1-15 2009)
The Rams hope to rebound strongly from the one win season in 2009, #1 pick Sam Bradford will be under center on opening day. He has shown that he is a leader, has the intangibles to win in this league, but now he will have to go out there and do it. The first five games will be good for Bradford as the Rams take on mediocre opponents in the Cardinals, Raiders, Redskins, Seahawks, and Lions (3 of those games at home). Steven Jackson is coming off a 1300+ season, but back surgery in April may play an affect on him early in the season. A preseason injury to #1 receiver Donnie Avery will significantly affect this offense, but look for Brandon Gibson, Danny Amendola, and Keenan Burton to step up. A.J. Feeley will be a good mentor for Bradford and look for Sam to develop quickly, throw some interceptions, but I think he will have a pretty good rookie campaign. The defense, as head coach Steve Spagnuolo preaches, will be the key to the season. Keep the offense in the game, stop the run, get to the quarter; this is the Rams defensive strategy this season. The additions of Na'il Diggs, Fred Robbins, Kevin Dockery, Kevin Payne, and Bobby Carpenter will help this Rams defense that already has solid play coming from Chris Long, and James Laurinaitis. Too much is needed to make this team a contender, but they will be improved from last season.
